Althy Cendana

Fish Welfare Initiative, Operations Associate

How did you start out in EA?

"My interest in EA was sparked in 2021 when a friend invited me to help start an EA student group at our university, UP Diliman. I helped organize and also attended our first fellowship, and later on led the student group. I realized how much my values aligned with EA principles and from then on actively thought about how I could make a difference in my career."

How did this lead to what you do now?

"After completing my bachelor’s degree, I joined the EA Philippines Core Team focusing my work on advising student groups, improving volunteer systems, and providing my insights on our strategy. I’ve always been passionate about animal welfare so outside of community building, I explored this by joining AEP meetups, attending the AVA conference, and just interacting with the community and looking for ways to volunteer my time and possibly transition my career."

What do you do now?

"I currently work at Fish Welfare Initiative as their Operations Associate. In this role, I get to combine my engineering background—like my analytical skills and systems thinking—with my passion for improving how farm animals are treated. I’m genuinely happy to be part of an organization that uses an evidence-based approach to improve the lives of fishes."

Dane Magaway

Virtual Assitant at CEA via Athena

How did you start out in EA?

"I first encountered EA through my work as a Virtual Assistant (VA) when I was matched with Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) two years ago. I initially found the movement somewhat distant from my Filipino context. But coming across EA PH's forum post in March 2024 (which announced plans for a new chapter in my region) sparked my active involvement."

How did this lead to what you do now?

"While working as a VA at CEA, I initially hesitated to join the EA PH Introductory Fellowship, thinking I needed a specific cause area (eg. Animal Welfare, AI Safety) to be part of EA. During a one-on-one, my client shared a perspective that changed everything - she helped me understand that it's better to come to the fellowship with an open mind and what truly matters is caring about people and other beings' experiences. This validating conversation deepened my appreciation for my role at CEA and inspired me to become more actively engaged with EA."

What do you do now?

"I continue supporting the EA community by being a VA at Centre for Effective Altruism. What started as "just a job" has become a meaningful way for me to contribute - I help keep things running smoothly behind the scenes, support EA Forum users, and connect people with impact-focused opportunities by sharing job listings and opportunities across EA organizations."
